Virat Kohli has always been passionate about cricket since his childhood at an age of 10, Kohli joined West Delhi Cricket Academy in 1998. In the year 2002, Kohli was selected in Delhi’s Under-15 team and he was also part of Delhi’s Under-17 team. Then in the year 2006, he was selected in India’s Under-19 team for England tour and in the same year, Kohli made his first-class debut for Delhi in Ranji Trophy. Kohli’s Career In Brief

Phase 1:-

  • Virat first joined a professional cricket club in 1998. He was the first player to join West Delhi Cricket Academy in 1998.
  • He initially started playing cricket under the guidance of his coach Rajkumar Sharma and at the same time he also used to play cricket for Sumeet Dogra.
  • In October 2002 he played for Delhi Under-15 team in 2002-03 Polly Umrigar Trophy and in the season 2003-04 Kohli captained the team in Polly Umrigar Trophy.
  • Then in 2004, Kohli made his Under-17 debut in 2003-04 Vijay Merchant Trophy for Delhi and he was also the highest run scorer in this tournament.
  • Kohli made his List-A debut in February 2006 for Delhi against Services but he didn’t bat in that match.
  • In the same year, Virat was also selected in India’s Under-19 squad for ODI and Test series against England Under-19 team.
  • Kohli scored at an average of 105 in ODIs and 49 in Tests in those series against England Under-19 team.

Phase 2:-

  • Kohli made his national debut in senior national team in 2008 against Sri Lanka on 18th August 2008 in ODI series.
  • He was also the part of Indian’s squad in 2009 ICC Champions Trophy. Then in 2010 Kohli made his T20 debut and played his first T20 international match against Zimbabwe on 12th June 2010.

  • Virat Kohli was signed by Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2008 for a sum of $30,000 but he was unable to make an impact and scored only 165 runs in 12 matches. Then in the next season in 2009, he scored 246 runs.

Virat Kohli is currently the biggest face of the game of cricket. He is regarded as the greatest batsman of all time by most of the experts of the game and generally plays at no. 3 and 4 positions but he had done opening in a few matches too. He is captain of the Indian Cricket Team in all formats and plays for Royal challenger Bangalore in IPL.

Virat Kohli Career Highlights

Phase 1:-

  • Kohli’s father took him to the academy after being suggested by his neighbour. Kohli trained at the academy under coach Rajkumar Sharma. When he was in 9th class, he shifted to Saviour Convent in Paschim Vihar to get better prospects. Then in October 2002, Kohli made his debut for Delhi Under-15 team in the 2002–03 Polly Umrigar Trophy tournament. After some exceptional performances and coming through ranks In July 2006, Kohli was selected in the India Under-19 squad. Virat came into the spotlight in December 2006, when he decided to play for his team against Karnataka on the day after his father’s death and went on to score 90.
  • In March 2008, Kohli captained the Under-19 Indian team at the 2008 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, Malaysia and became champions after beating South Africa in finals. He made his One-day international debut, at the age of 19, in the first ODI of the tour against Sri Lanka and was dismissed for 12. In December 2009 in a home ODI series against Sri Lanka he scored his first ODI century–107 off 111 balls. He was India’s leading run-scorer in ODIs in 2010 and became strong contender for a spot WC 2011.Kohli played in every match of India’s successful World Cup 2011 campaign. He scored an unbeaten 100 against Bangladesh and became the first Indian to score a century on World Cup debut and also played an important knock of 35, sharing an 83-run partnership with Gautam Gambhir in the finals. This match got finished by Ms Dhoni‘s monstrous six and India went on to the win World Cup after 28 years.

Phase 2:-

  • After founding a place in India’s Test squad for the tour of Australia in December 2011 while fielding on the boundary during the second match, he gestured middle finger to the crowd for which he was fined 50% of his match fees. In a match of CWB triangular series, 2012 against Sri Lanka at Hobart, Kohli went on to score 133*from 86 balls to take India to a comfortable win with 13 overs to spare and played a special knock an over where he hit Malinga for 24 runs. Kohli was appointed the vice-captain for the 2012 Asia Cup and in a match against Pakistan, he scored a personal best 183 off 148 balls. In 2013, he featured in the ICC Champions Trophy in England which India won. He was also named as the part of the ‘Team of the Tournament. He was member of the team for 2014 & 2016 ICC World Twenty20 and Kohli was man of the Tournament in both these tournaments but India lost both the tournament.
  • In 2014 India tour of England, Kohli’s technique was exposed by Jimmy Anderson and he saw the worst phase of his career. For the first Test of the Australian tour in December 2014, and Kohli took the reins as Test captain for the first time and he hit centuries in both the innings of the Test. Then India went on to play in Australia for World Cup 2015 where Kohli gave average performances and India lost the Tournament after losing in semi-final against Australia (won that WC). In the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 in India, Kohli played an unbeaten knock of 82 from 51 balls in India’s must-win group match against Australia, it is being regarded as his finest knock in this format.

Phase 3:-

  • Virat Kohli then got the chance to captain team India in an ICC tournament for the first time in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. India lost to Pakistan in finals but he was named as part of the ‘Team of the Tournament’ at the 2017 Champions Trophy. On 2 August 2018, Kohli scored his first Test century on English soil in the first test match of the series against England and Kohli didn’t got dismissed by Jimmy Anderson even once in that series but India still lost that series.
  • In 2018-2019 Border Gavaskar Trophy, he finished the series with 282 runs at an average of 40 and by winning the test series in Australia, which made Kholi the first Indian and even the first Asian captain to win a Test series in Australia. In April 2019, he was named the captain of Indian team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. Kohli scored five consecutive fifty plus score in the tournament but India lost the semi-final against New Zealand, in which Kohli was out cheaply. In November 2020, Kohli won Sir Garfield Sobers Award for being the Male cricketer of the decade and ODI cricketer of the decade.
  • In test series, against Australia during November 2020, Kohli left the squad after a disastrous end of 1st test because of paternity leave. India went on to win that series under captaincy of Ajinkya Rahane and thanks to once in a lifetime effort by the young Indian team which made the entire cricket world go crazy and described India’s recovery as One of the great comebacks in cricket history.
